The Cambridge and District Cooperative Society once had 84,000 members in a city of 101,000. It wasn't a shop, it was a whole society: producers, workshops, gathering places, learning spaces, and celebrations that held a community together.
We're rekindling it.
Together Culture Cambridge is building the Kite Cooperative Society for the 21st century: a neighbourhood economy rooted in shared prosperity, mutual obligation, and a stake in what gets built.
If you believe meaningful change happens with others, not alone, this is where it takes root.
We're not looking for members. We're looking for cooperators. people who want a voice in how this is shaped, a role in how it's delivered, and a stake in what it becomes.

The Kite Heritage Project
Kite Heritage exists to shift the narrative. Its purpose is to create belief and shared understanding in the value of a neighbourhood economy by celebrating, exploring, and taking active inspiration from the cooperative heritage of this place, and using those stories to guide decisions about today and the future.
The outcome we are working toward is a community that can say: 'We know what people like us built here in the past. We know it is possible. And we know what we are building next.'

The Kite Nature Project
Kite Nature exists to change how people think about systems, about change, about themselves in relation to their neighbourhood (both human and non-human life). Its purpose is to develop the capacity to think like an ecosystem rather than a hierarchy: to understand how change happens regeneratively, how interdependence creates resilience, and how we can design our cooperative to be as enduring and responsive as a healthy natural system.
The outcome we are working toward is a community that can say: 'We know how to design for complexity. We know how to tend what we build. And we know how to grow together.'
