The Changemaker’s Toolkit | Moving Beyond ‘Change Theatre’

Does the phrase ‘change theatre’ mean anything to you?

It’s a really visceral phrase for me. I can picture myself sitting in specific meeting rooms, watching and listening to a conversation amongst well-meaning peers play out.

They really want different outcomes. Yet, even taking the risk to think differently, let alone act differently is a step too far out of their comfort zone.

A new product, project, or programme gets developed, rolled out, evaluated and - nothing really changes.

I decided to stop and turn my frustration into fuel. That’s when Together Culture was born.

I set out to better understand what happens if, before we decide on a change programme, we explore the root of what informs how we structure that change programme - how we think.

And I do really mean ‘we’. Not individually, but collectively. How does a group believe change happens? Clearly, that’s going to be fundamental to making change happen.

The amazing research team at the Good Shift, a systems thinking and change institute in Australia, have outlined seven different change worldviews. Seven.

No wonder people often think they are on the same page, but when we dig into the deep work of change, we’re misaligned. How we think dictates what we perceive to be true and what we perceive to be true informs how we act.

We all know this to be true on an individual level. This is reductive, but universal. You wake up, you are in a lousy mood and you think ‘today will be rubbish’. You will more than likely experience a rubbish day. Yet, you wake up and think ‘today will be an adventure, I can’t wait.’ You will more than likely have an invigorating day.

How does this manifest in teams, workforces, communities? I’m far from the only person to ask that question. Here’s a behind the scenes shot of some of the research by social scientists, psychologists, and journalists that’s fed into ‘Develop an Innovation Mindset’.

Some of the books on Heather’s reading shelf recently.

The answer of course is that the group is rather similar to the individual as far as mindset goes - albeit more complex, because many minds make a network of mindsets.

This course helps you to develop new perspectives and new skills that help you make change happen and lead others to do the same - starting by exploring how you think. And what ‘we’ think shapes our culture and sets the boundaries for the change that is possible.
